What Are The Challenges Currently Facing St. Louis Public Schools?

The St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS) system faces significant financial challenges. To ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive, we must address these concerns with urgency, transparency, and a commitment to responsible spending. Andre D. Walker is dedicated to confronting these challenges head-on, guided by his financial expertise and vision for our schools' sustainable future.

Key Matters of Concern:

  • Restoring Fiscal Responsibility Through Accountability and Transparency

Millions in the budget are not reaching students, financial reports are unclear, and wasteful spending is rampant.

    Andre's Commitment:

    • Implement rigorous financial audits and oversight.

    • Establish transparent and easily accessible financial reports for the public.

    • Cut wasteful spending and redirect funds to classrooms and student programs.

  • Ensuring Equitable Resource Allocation and Strategic Development

Funding disparities exist across SLPS schools, under-resourced schools are concentrated in underserved communities, and there's a lack of resources for vital programs.

    Andre's Commitment:

    • Advocate for equitable funding formulas that address the needs of all schools.

    • Prioritize resource allocation to underfunded schools and communities.

    • Develop strategies for sustainable resource development and partnerships.

  • Establishing Ethical Governance and Accountability

Ethical lapses and a lack of accountability have eroded public trust. Questionable contract awards and decisions further damage the system.

    Andre's Commitment:

    • Demand ethical leadership and transparency in all board decisions.

    • Ensure open and competitive bidding processes for contracts.

    • Hold board members accountable for their actions and decisions.

  • Investing in Educators and Staff for Student Success

Low teacher salaries, high turnover rates, a lack of financial planning support for educators, and insufficient professional development resources undermine student success.

    Andre's Commitment:

    • Push for a $60K starting salary for teachers.

    • Provide financial planning and support resources for educators.

    • Invest in professional development and retention strategies to keep talented teachers.

  • Strengthening Community Engagement and Parent Empowerment

Public participation in budget decisions is minimal, parent involvement and communication are lacking, and school-community partnerships need strengthening.

    Andre's Commitment:

    • Increase opportunities for public input in budget planning.

    • Prioritize parent involvement and improve communication channels.

    • Build strong partnerships with community organizations and stakeholders.

  • Fostering Student-Centered Innovation and Academic Excellence for Future Readiness

There's a need for expanded STEM, arts, and vocational education. Students must be prepared for both college and career paths, and disparities in academic achievement need to be addressed.

    Andre's Commitment:

    • Advocate for increased funding for STEM, arts, and vocational programs.

    • Develop pathways for college and career readiness.

    • Implement innovative teaching strategies and personalized learning approaches.
